Microdermabrasion 101

Microdermabrasion is an intensive exfoliating treatment, which buffs away the surface layer of the skin, the “stratum corneum”. In simpler terms, this is the layer which keeps everything but the smallest molecules from getting through to the lower levels of skin – meaning all the lotions and potions we put on our skin sometimes don’t get deep enough into the skin for them to work their magic.

This layer is also home to minor skin imperfections such as blemishes and fine lines – meaning microdermabrasion is a great treatment for these issues with few side effects and no downtime. The list of problems microdermabrasion can treat doesn’t stop there though. It’s also useful for those with dull skin, mild acne, mild pigmentation and superficial scarring – mostly mild skin conditions which do not need a more intense treatment.

The gentle vacuum action from microdermabrasion gives an added benefit for those with tired skin. By stimulating an increased blood supply to the face, new cell regeneration is encouraged – which means new collagen and elastin fibres – the two things you need for stronger, firmer, younger looking skin!

You can choose from 45 minute treatments, up to 75 minutes. If you’re just starting out, it’s best to go for a shorter treatment to get your skin used to the exfolitation. After the microdermabrasion, a handpicked mask best suited to your skin is applied, which will penetrate deep into the lower layers of the epidermis.

Following treatment, any products you use will have a greater impact – but it’s also important to wear and SPF and use an antioxidant so you’re skin is not affected by free radicals and sun damage.
